Course Details – Scorching Bay

Course overviews

Listed below are short overviews for all ‘normal’ course options held at Scorching Bay this summer (Nov, Dec, Jan and the end of March.

New for 2011 The Novice Course involves:

  • Swim 100m in waist deep water in a sheltered bay which is usually flat
  • Cycle 6km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back to near the Seatoun Wharf, this ride is completely flat
  • Run 1.2km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to the north end of Point Gordon, and is flat

Note: there is no Duathlon or team option for the Novice course… the intention is for those new to triathlon to try an acheiveable triathlon distance all on their own
Minimum Age: 10 years old

The Short Course involves:

  • Swim 250m in a sheltered bay which is usually flat
  • Cycle 15km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back to the Moa Point Dog Pound, with one small hill to go over in each direction
  • Run 2.5km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Kau point , and is flat

For Duathletes:  the opening swim is replaced with a 1.2k run (northn from Scorching Bay to the North end of Point Gordon).
Minimum Age: 10 years old

The Medium Course involves:

The medium course has two options, depending on what swim distance you choose.

Option one is the Medium500, which is

  • Swim 500m in a sheltered bay which is usually flat.  Two laps.
  • Cycle 20km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back to the the second roundabout in Lyall Bay, with one small hill to go over in each direction
  • Run 5km
    • (November event only) heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for two laps out and back to Kau Point – is flat
    • (Dec-Mar events) heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Massey memorial  carpark.  It is flat.

For Duathletes, the opening swim is replaced with a 2.5k run (one lap to Kau Point and back)
Minimum Age: 13 years old

Option two is the Medium750, which is

  • Swim 750m sheltered and usually flat, three laps
  • the rest of the course remains as per the Medium500 option

The Medium500 is available at all events
The Medium750 is available for the Dec, Jan, Feb & March events
Minimum Age: 13 years old

The Long Course involves:

The Long course for November comprises of:

  • Swim 1000m in a sheltered and usually flat, bay (2 laps)
  • Cycle 30km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back, turns up Houghton Road away from the water to climb for 2k to the the top and the intersection with Buckley Road, with one small hill to go over in each direction, plus a “very honest” hill climb to the turn point
  • Run 8km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for two laps out and back to just short of Point Halswell.  It is flat.

Duathletes: the opening swim is replaced with a 4k run (as per the closing run, but just one lap)
Minimum Age: 16 years old

Please note: For those that are considering this course, the cycle has a ‘grunty’ 2km climb to reach the turn point -please check out the climb before the event, otherwise you might be a bit shocked with what the Angels have set up for this course.  This particular course option is recommended for strong, confident (or stubborn) cyclists only.

The Long course for December, January, March events:

The Long course for the December, January, & March events, reverts to the standard Olympic distance option, comprising of:

  • Swim 1500m in a sheltered and usually flat bay (3 laps)
  • Cycle 40km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back, turns uphill at Owhiro Bay and climbs towards the Brooklyn shops on Happy Valley Road / Ohiro Road to the intersection with Taft Street, with one small hill to go over in each direction, plus a gradual 4k hill climb to the turn point
  • Run 10km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for two laps out and back to Massey Memorial Carpark.  It is flat.

 

Minimum Age: 16 years old
