February Scorcher

There are two more events after this one, but this one will be the last of the ‘regular’ Scorchers for the 2015/2016 season.

Also included within this event will be the below sub events:

Wellington Emergency Services Triathlon (formerly known as the Wellington Police Triathlon):

  • This sub-event is open to all Emergency Service employees (including Police, Fire, Ambulance, Corrections & Aviation Security) and volunteers within the Wellington Region.
  • The event distance is 750m Swim – 20 km Bike – 5 km Run. (ie the Scorcher Med750 Tri option). You can enter as either an individual or as a team.

Wellington Triathlon Club Champ races (for Wellington Triathlon Club members):

  • This will be held over the Standard distance course (Long Course) – for those aged 16 or over on race day.

After the February event we have two more Scorchers left for summer. Both events are different formats (and with lots of fun). In March it will be the Scorcher Triple Challenge on March 13th, and then the Scorcher Teams Challenge on April 3rd. Both events are a lot of fun offering a truly unique event format not seen elsewhere in New Zealand and we encourage you to give them a go. Past seasons feedback has been hugely positive.

Basic Course Details

The Novice Triathlon comprises the following legs:

Leg Distance Description
Swim 100m in waist deep water in a sheltered bay which is usually flat
Cycle 6km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back to near the Seatoun Wharf, this ride is completely flat
Run 1.2km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to the north end of Point Gordon, and is flat

Note: there is no Duathlon for the Novice course…

Minimum Age: 10 years old

The Short Triathlon comprises the following legs:

Leg Distance Description
Swim 250m is a single clockwise lap within Scorching Bay which is normally over summer sheltered from the winds and as such is usually flat
Cycle 15km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back to the Moa Point Dog Pound, with one small hill (Pass of Branda) to go over in each direction
Run 2.5km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Kau point , and is flat

The Short Duathlon comprises the following legs:

Leg Distance Description
Opening Run 1.2km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to the north end of Point Gordon, and is flat
Cycle 15km Heads South around the coast line for a one lap out and back to the Moa Point Dog Pound, with one small hill (Pass of Branda) to go over in each direction
Closing Run 2.5km heads North, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Kau point , and is flat

The Medium Triathlon comprises the following legs:

Cycle 20km Heads South from Scorching Bay around the coast line for a one lap out and back to the the second roundabout in Lyall Bay, with one small hill (Pass of Branda) to go over in each direction
Run 5km heads North from Scorching Bay, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Massey Memorial carpark. It is flat.

Minimum Age: 13 years old

The Medium Duathlon comprises the following legs:

Opening Run 2.5km heads North from Scorching Bay, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Kau point , and is flat
Cycle 20km Heads South from Scorching Bay around the coast line for a one lap out and back to the the second roundabout in Lyall Bay, with one small hill (Pass of Branda) to go over in each direction
Final Run 5km heads North from Scorching Bay, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Massey Memorial carpark. It is flat.

Minimum Age: 13 years old

The Long Triathlon comprises the following legs:

Leg Distance Description
Swim 1500m is a three lap (500m per lap) clockwise swim within Scorching Bay which is normally over summer sheltered from the winds and as such is usually flat – at the furtherest points from shore you are swimming just at the outer edge of the Bay
Cycle 40km Heads South from Scorching Bay around the coast line for a one lap out and back, turns uphill at Owhiro Bay and climbs towards the Brooklyn shops on Happy Valley Road / Ohiro Road to the intersection with Taft Street, with one small hill (Pass of Branda) to go over in each direction, plus a gradual 4k hill climb to the turn point
Run 10km heads North from Scorching Bay, along the edge of the road / coast for two laps out and back to Massey Memorial carpark. It is flat.

Minimum Age: 16 years old

The Long Duathlon comprises the following legs:

Opening Run 5km heads North from Scorching Bay, along the edge of the road / coast for one lap out and back to Massey Memorial carpark. It is flat.
Cycle 40km Heads South from Scorching Bay around the coast line for a one lap out and back, turns uphill at Owhiro Bay and climbs towards the Brooklyn shops on Happy Valley Road / Ohiro Road to the intersection with Taft Street, with one small hill (Pass of Branda) to go over in each direction, plus a gradual 4k hill climb to the turn point

Swim1000 1k is a two lap (500m per lap) clockwise swim within Scorching Bay which is normally over summer sheltered from the winds and as such is usually flat – at the furtherest points from shore you are swimming just at the outer edge of the Bay – this starts at the same time as the Long Triathlon
Swim2000 2km is a four lap (500m per lap) clockwise swim within Scorching Bay which is normally over summer sheltered from the winds and as such is usually flat – at the furtherest points from shore you are swimming just at the outer edge of the Bay – this starts at the same time as the Long Triathlon
